When I first saw this whole IT girl, I just got into kpop and I liked blackpink, so to me…it made sense. Jennie is extremely popular and was back then too. But now that I’ve developed critical thinking skills and two generations have passed, I was confused on why there even needed to be a new IT girl and why everyone is acting like we’re choosing the new pope. I think anyone can see Jennie is still in her prime and if anything has become more popular, and that there’s a lot of 3rd gen girlies who still hold a lot of weight in the industry, but when I brought up to a mutual she was like “oh well…she’s old now, so she can’t be.” Jennie is only 29.
This constant need to replace women in the industry with newer younger faces is not only a form of misogyny, it’s really harmful. Not only does it sell the narrative that these women are too old to be deemed attractive or intriguing enough for said title, it also creates a predatory and toxic environment for these CHILDREN that have this unnecessary role put on them that means absolutely nothing in the long run. Women don’t just expire after they turn 30 and that doesn’t make their success invalid. It is dangerous to rank these women and in the fifth gen case, young girls and talk about them as if they are video game characters in a fighting game when they are real human beings, even if they are entertainers.
Like maybe I’m too woke and I know this sounds like such a non issue, but I just wanted to share my opinion on a hot topic. The title of IT girl means nothing at the end of the day because things constantly change and you never know who blows up. These women successes aren’t measured by said title especially since there’s a new group everyday it feels like. It’s just an unimportant thing that holds absolutely no value at the end of the day.
