So this Daehwi statement has been making the rounds on Twitter and of course, it has the usual kpop-obssessed, Korea-hating mfs mad
Nobody is saying seniority culture can’t be abused. Obviously some people take it too far. But a lot of y’all aren’t criticizing the abuse, you’re acting like bowing, greeting seniors, and basic respect etiquette is some stupid backwards thing because it doesn’t match your own culture.
Like lets be fr, if someone mocked AAVE and said “why can’t they just speak properly,” or something like that, people would clock that immediately. Some people are probably already uncomfortable with me even using that hypothetical, which is the whole point. People know exactly when disrespect toward a culture sounds ugly.
But when it’s Korean culture? Suddenly it’s open season.
A lot of K-pop fans love consuming Korean entertainment while acting like Koreans are backwards whenever the culture doesn’t fit their Western lens. The superiority complex is so obvious.
Criticize people abusing hierarchy all you want. But if your whole point is “Korean etiquette is dumb because I personally don’t get it,” you’re just being loud and ignorant.
